The Chandra Source Catalog 2.0: Expanding coverage to Large Extended Sources
Abstract
The second release of the Chandra Source Catalog (CSC 2.0) improves upon the previous catalog release (CSC 1.1) in numerous ways, including a first attempt at including large, extended, diffuse X-ray sources, such as jets, supernova remnants, galaxy halos, and galaxy clusters. The CSC 2.0 release will provide the location of these sources and their outlines, described using a convex-hull polygon, as well as estimates of fluxes in multiple bands for these regions using similaralgorithms to those developed for the point-source population. In this poster we focus on the unique challenges introduced by detecting, combining, and characterizing these irregularly-shaped extended sources, and provide an initial overview of their properties. This work has been supported by NASA under contract NAS 8-03060 to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory for operation of the Chandra X-ray Center.
